Tlte Divanoke West-mi a Yaar, in Advance. “FOR eoo, FOR COUNTRY AND FOR TRUTH.1 Single Copy 5 Cent*. VOL. 35 PLYMOUTH. N.C., FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1924 NO. 27 Gkining Strength HON. VAN B. MARTIN Candidate For Congress to Represent First District In last week’3 issue of The Elizabeth City Independent the aspirants for Congressional no mination on the Democratic tick et were summed up carefully. The Independent states, that af ter careful investigation and in quiry in practically all the count ies of the district, it is of the opinion that Warren and Aydlett will compete in a possible second primary for the nomination, all the other candidates being eli minated of course, in the first primary. The Beacon has other views. Recent advices from Martin and Pitt counties indicate that Van B. Martin will gain a majority over all other candidates on the south side of the sound, including Lindsey Warren. The Indepen dent gives Pitt and Beaufort counties to Mr. Warren, while Martin countv is rese ved for Biggs. Information v e have re ceived since the article in the In dependent causes us to form the opinion that Mr. Martin will carry Pitt county over al> other candidates, will split Beaufort with Mr. Warren and will gather a considerable numbe* of votes in Martin county Washington county will go practically solid for Martin. This is indisputable. Headquarters of Mr. Martin inform indicatively that Hyde county will contribute as mar y votes to Mr. Martin as any other candidate, at least. Reports from Hertford and Perquimans count ies indicate that Mr. Martin will split at least evenly with Mr, Aydelett. Mr. Warren does not seem to have gathered very much strength bn the north side of the sound. Mr. Martin having lived and practised his profession on the north side of the sound will give him an advantage over con testants of the south side. Others who are aspirants for the nomination are Mr. Mann of Hyde county, Mr. Griffin of Cho wan county and Dr. Biggs of Martin county. We de not agree with the In dependent in its views entirely, and our viewpoint is that there wiFbea second primary, and that in that scuffle Mr. Warren or Mr. Aydlett will have the pleasure of locking horns with r. Martin. And our idea is that that pleasure will fall to the can didate from Beaufort county. entertainment at CHAPEL HILL There will be an entertainment at Chapel Hill School house Fri day night March 7th given by the Ladies Aid. Bef eshments will be sold and a fish pond also. Pleasant Rally Service Last Friday night the court h^use was the scene of a very successful religious rally service The Methodist congregation is planning the building of a new •hurch as soon as possible, and this service wasjheld for the pur pose of stimulating interest »mong the members in the pro ject \ large crowd attended and heard a sp’endid address by Rev. H, M. North, pastor of the Methodist church at Rocky Mount, who was here for that purpose. He spoke in high terms of praise of the plans, and congratulated the peo ple of the church for beginning the movement. Pledge cards were distributed among tt e con gregation, and the response, so we are told by Rev. W. G. Lowe, was highly pleasing. Refreshments were served in the basement of the church by the Ladies' Aid Society, which were thoroughly enjoyed. Plymouth people can expect to see a splendid new building erected on the church property in a short while, although definite plans have not been settled uron as yet. COMMISSIONERS’ PROCEEDINGS T. L. I take this method of announcing my candid acy fcr the office of Sheriff of Washington County, subject to the action of the Democratic Primary on June 7, 1924/ I have filled the unexpired term of my father, the late Joseph E. Reid, for the past several months to the very best of my ability. Prior to his death I served him in the capacity of deputy sheriff for several years, and during that time I became familiar with the work of the office, which I believe has equipped me to serve the people bet ter than ever. I have given careful study to the duties of the office, and while I do not know it all, I sincerely be lieve that the knowledge I have gained by actual service and carful study is a valuable asset to me and the people who are to be served. If nominated and elected I promise to serve the people of the entire county to the very best of my ability, and no especial concessions or favors win be shown none that are not consistent with the duties of the office. I will appreciate your support in the nrimaries if you feel that my service warrants it. Respectfully, JOSEPH K. REID. TO THE DEMOCRATIC VOTER OF THE FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTs Elizabeth City, N. C. February 9, 1924. Mr. Herbert Peele, Editor 0TKThe Advance, City. , Dear Mr. Editor In your yesterday afternoons issue, mention is mac e of my name as among the possible entries in the race for the Democratic nomination for Congr 3ss from this District. W hile I appreciate deeply the compliment in volved in these suggestions and the kind allusions which you and others have made to me, it seems to me proper that I make prompt announcement that I cannot and will not be a candidate in the approaching primary. I am committed to the candidacy of my friend and fellow-townsman, Hon. E F. Aydlett, who has been in the service of the party much longer than I, and who is well qualified for the position. I believe that he will fill the* vacancy with honor and credit to himself and the district, and I hope that he may be chosen. May I also take advantage of this onnorunity to make public acknowledgement of my gratitude for the many expressions of desire that I become a candidate, which have come to me. These evi dences of confidence and good-will are a sufficient reward for whatever of service T may be able to perform for my people. Sincerely, J. C. B. EHRINGHAUS. 8 t
